These days it seems like Lin Carter is more respected as an editor than an author. However, at times he was capable of penning some very fine works of fantasy, such as the novel Lost World of Time. Of course, with a bibliography as massive as Carter’s, it’s easy to overlook some gems. His two tales of a savage tribe known as the People of the Dragon, for example, are among his best but remain relatively unknown. The tribesmen and the prehistoric world they inhabit are very similar to those found in Robert E. Howard’s “The Valley of the Worm.” Carter’s concept for the series was to have each story take place approximately a generation after the previous—an interesting idea, which makes it all the more unfortunate that only two were written. We present both of them here: “People of the Dragon,” which has never before been reprinted, and its sequel “The Pillars of Hell.”
